We went without a big party this year. I wish I could be the type of mom that could handle one every year, cause well... you know it's special and all. But in my ripe old age, I am well aware of what I can enjoy every other year and what will make me crazy if I try and pull it off every year. I am OK with this.
We had a small family "party" which really just meant 1 balloon, gifts sent from family and a cake. Fortunately, Claire is also OK with this, because she is 3 and she doesn't remember last week let alone last years party (We shall see how I pull this off with the soon to be 7 year old this year, eesh...its a word according to urban dictionary) But Claire thought it was fabulous cause she even got to pick out the Mac&Cheese for dinner. Claire also reacted like I bought her a car when she opened her gift from me: a backpack with her school supplies for preschool.
Other favorite gifts were some pants which she promptly smelled and exclaimed, "They smell so good!" And her gardening tools, which she thought were awesome, until I took her outside the next morning and showed her the pile of leaves.
